There’s some great news on the horizon, our planet’s ozone layer is finally starting to heal, and it’s all thanks to the collective action of humanity over the past few decades.
The Discovery
The ozone hole was first discovered by Johnathan Shanklin in 1985. He found that (ironically) non-toxic substances called CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) found primarily in aerosol cans and refrigerator equipment, where eroding the protective ozone layer that shields our planet from harmful UV rays.
These substances were first used in refrigerators in the 1920s. They served as a safe and non-toxic means of keeping food cold and frozen. Additionally, they were used in spray cans and fire extinguishers. It was thought that these chemicals would be better for the planet as they were non-toxic and non-threatening to life. However, the opposite was true.
These substances would be dispersed and become suspended in the atmosphere, rising high up into the stratosphere. UV rays would cause a chemical reaction with them at that level. This led to the release of chlorine atoms, which would break down the ozone.
Working Together
Shanklin’s findings had an astronomical (pun intended) impact on humanity. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol was established, which inhibited the production and use of these ozone-depleting substances.
There was serious concern surrounding the hole that had developed and what that might mean for our planet. One of the biggest concerns was the increased risk of skin cancer. This made it a global health issue as well as an environmental issue and thus propelled government bodies into rapid action.
Humanity had to work together as a collective to restrict the use of these substances. To protect our planet, alternative substances were created so that our ozone layer could heal. For the past 30 something years, that has slowly but very surely been happening.
Great News
It appears that our collective effort has started to pay off. Our ozone layer is steadily repairing itself, and this means great news for humanity! Since 2000, our ozone layer has gradually been improving.
This truly shows how when we work together, the power of collective action and the good of humanity can bring about real, impactful change!
If every single one of us tried, we together could apply the same strategy against problems like climate warming. Here at V Claire we do our part in this battle by choosing to use products that reflect our beliefs. We also sell products that align with our values.
For starters, we export our goods from close countries like France and Italy. This is done in order to reduce our carbon footprint and the impact of transportation.
We also believe in the relevance of Fair Trade. Therefore, we make sure to work with companies that resonate with our mind-set. These companies respect their workers and the environment during the full production process.
