There’s some great news on the horizon, our planet’s ozone layer is finally starting to heal, and it’s all thanks to the collective action of humanity over the past few decades.
The Discovery
The ozone hole was first discovered by Johnathan Shanklin in 1985. He found that (ironically) non-toxic substances called CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) found primarily in aerosol cans and refrigerator equipment, where eroding the protective ozone layer that shields our planet from harmful UV rays.
These substances were first used in refrigerators in the 1920s as a safe and non-toxic means of keeping food cold and frozen. They were then used in spray cans such as deodorants, hairspray, and fire extinguishers. It was thought that these chemicals would be better for the planet as they were non-toxic and non-threatening to life. However, the opposite was true.
These substances would be dispersed and become suspended in the atmosphere, rising high up into the stratosphere where UV rays would cause a chemical reaction with them. This led to the release of chlorine atoms, which would break down the ozone.
Working Together
Shanklin’s findings had an astronomical (pun intended) impact on humanity. His findings were quickly published in 1985, and by 1987, the Montreal Protocol was established, which inhibited the production and use of these ozone-depleting substances.
There was serious concern surrounding the hole that had developed and what that might mean for our planet. One of the biggest concerns was the increased risk of skin cancer. This made it a global health issue as well as an environmental issue and thus propelled government bodies into rapid action.
Humanity had to work together as a collective to restrict the use of these substances. In order to protect our planet, alternative and less damaging substances were created so that our ozone layer could heal. For the past 30 something years that has slowly but very surely been happening.
Great News
It appears that our collective effort has started to pay off. Our ozone layer is steadily repairing itself, and this means great news for humanity! Since 2000, our ozone layer has gradually been improving. It is estimated that between 2040 and 2066, the ozone hole will be mostly restored. This means that humanity and other life on earth will be better protected from the harmful effects of UV rays once again!
This truly shows how when we work together, the power of collective action and the good of humanity can bring about real, impactful change!
It also means that if every single one of us tried, we together could apply the same strategy against problems like climate warming: here at V Claire we do our part in this battle by choosing to use and sell products that reflect our beliefs.
For starters, we export our goods from close countries like France and Italy in order to reduce our carbon footprint and the impact of their transportation.
We also believe in the relevance of Fair Trade. Therefore, we make sure to work with companies that resonate with our mind-set and that respect their workers and the environment during the full production process. Speaking of that, did you know that since we are certified Bio, there are absolutely zero chemicals involved in the production of our products, not even in the cleaning of the machinery used?
Additionally, all our Couleur Caramel makeup is now fully compostable, as it is made with corn starch, and all our Centella and Hydraflore products are recyclable.
Lastly, we promote the idea that refilling is always better than buying again and again, and that is why we offer our clients the possibility to refill some of their Najel, Couleur Caramel and Centella products in our store!
